Dentures

What are Dentures?

Custom-made prosthetic teeth called dentures are designed to replace missing or damaged natural teeth. Made from durable hard resin, they provide a lasting solution for restoring your smile. During your appointment, your dentist will talk about the different types of dentures and assist you in selecting the most suitable option for your requirements. If you currently have dentures and have any inquiries about them, please bring them to your appointment.

Types of Dentures

Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are created to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth and are attached to the gums and nearby natural teeth. Unlike permanent options, partial dentures can be taken out for cleaning and at night.

Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are removable prosthetics that are placed on the same day as tooth extraction, providing a solution for patients undergoing single or multiple tooth removals. This ensures that you do not have to go without teeth while healing from the extractions.

Complete Dentures
Full dentures, also called complete dentures, are specifically made for individuals who have had all their natural teeth extracted. They are custom-fitted for either the upper or lower jaw, serving as a replacement for a full set of teeth. These dentures are removable for cleaning and can be taken out while sleeping.

Overdentures
Overdentures are specifically created to be placed over existing natural teeth or dental implants. They not only help maintain any remaining natural teeth but also offer a secure and stable fit. In cases where there are no natural teeth, overdentures can be placed over dental implants to provide additional support.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are anchored by dental implants, titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone. These implants create a secure base for the denture, allowing it to be easily attached and removed for improved stability and support.

Getting used to your Dentures

It may take some time to adjust to new dentures. At first, they may feel loose or cause more saliva production. If you feel any discomfort, be sure to let your dentist know. They can make the necessary adjustments to improve the fit and make your dentures more comfortable.

How to care for your Dentures

Taking care of your dentures is just as important as maintaining your natural teeth. Even though dentures are artificial, they can still collect plaque, tartar, and bacteria. It is recommended to clean your dentures with a denture cleaner or mild soap when they are not in your mouth.

When cleaning your dentures, use a denture brush or a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging them with regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive. Effervescent tabs can also be helpful in keeping your dentures clean.

Furthermore, remember to brush your gums and any remaining natural teeth with fluoridated toothpaste to ensure your smile stays healthy and bright.

How to preserve your Dentures

Make sure to take out your dentures before going to bed so your gums can rest and breathe. This will help prevent bacteria and yeast from growing in your mouth and lower the chances of decay on your natural teeth. To keep your dentures in good condition, store them in warm water overnight.

Benefits of High-Quality Dentures

Dentures provide a great way to achieve a healthy and natural smile. They improve both appearance and functionality, making it easier to bite, chew, and speak. Properly fitting dentures can also improve speech clarity and protect your existing teeth. Furthermore, they support the normal function of your mouth and gums.
